  1. DVORAK KEYBOARD LAYOUTS FOR MS-DOS
  2. ----------------------------------
  3. Microsoft distributes Dvorak keyboard layouts that make the most 
  4. frequently typed characters on a keyboard more accessible to people 
  5. who have difficulty using the standard "QWERTY" layout. There are 
  6. three Dvorak layouts: one for two-handed users, one for people who 
  7. type only with their left hand, and one for people who type only 
  8. with their right hand. The left or right hand keyboard layouts can 
  9. also be used by people who type with a wand.
  10.  
  11. The MS-DOS Supplemental Disk includes the DVORAK.SYS file, which 
  12. provides three new keyboard layouts for Microsoft MS-DOS.
  13.  
  14. This document explains how to install these layouts and restore 
  15. your original layout. It also provides illustrations of the layouts.

  17. WHAT IS A KEYBOARD LAYOUT?
  18. --------------------------
  19. A keyboard layout is a map or a definition of how keys are laid 
  20. out on your keyboard. The keyboard layout you use is determined 
  21. by software in your computer. The letters on your keys indicate 
  22. the standard layout for your keyboard. There are many different 
  23. keyboard layouts in use throughout the world. The one you ordinarily 
  24. use depends on the country you are in or the language you use.

  26. DVORAK KEYBOARD LAYOUTS
  27. -----------------------
  28. Dvorak keyboard layouts are based on designs created by August 
  29. Dvorak, a professor at the University of Washington during the 
  30. 1930s and 1940s. Dr. Dvorak studied the way people type standard 
  31. English, and determined the most common letter combinations. He 
  32. then designed new keyboard layouts to speed up typing and reduce 
  33. fatigue. These layouts, now called Dvorak or simplified keyboards, 
  34. were initially developed for two-handed typists. Following World 
  35. War II, Dvorak layouts were developed for typists who use the right 
  36. or left hand alone.

  38. INSTALLING A DVORAK KEYBOARD LAYOUT FOR MS-DOS
  39. ----------------------------------------------
  40. The MS-DOS Supplemental Disk provides the DVORAK.SYS file. This 
  41. file supports the Dvorak keyboard layouts for two-handed and 
  42. single-handed typists who use MS-DOS 6.22.
  43.  
  44. To install a United States (U.S.) Dvorak keyboard layout for MS-DOS:
  45.  
  46. 1. Run the Setup program included with the Supplemental disk files.
  47.    For example, if your Supplemental disk files are on a floppy
  48.    disk for drive A, insert the disk in drive A, and change to
  49.    that drive by typing the following at the command prompt:

  53.    To run the Setup program, you need to specify the drive and directory
  54.    to which you want to install the files. For example, if you want to
  55.    install the files on drive C in a directory called SUPP, type
  56.    the following at the command prompt:

  58.    SETUP C:\SUPP
  59.  
  60.    Follow the instructions on your screen.

  62. 2. Copy the DVORAK.SYS file to the directory that contains your
  63.    MS-DOS files. For example, if the file is in C:\SUPP and your
  64.    MS-DOS files are contained in C:\DOS, type the following at
  65.    the command prompt:

  67.    COPY C:\SUPP\DVORAK.SYS C:\DOS\DVORAK.SYS
  68.    
  69. 3. To begin using one of the new keyboard layouts, type the 
  70.    appropriate command (as shown in the table below) at the MS-DOS 
  71.    command prompt and press ENTER.

  81. To load one of these keyboard layouts automatically when your 
  82. computer starts, include the appropriate KEYB command in your 
  83. AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The KEYB command should be placed after a 
  84. PATH command that includes your MS-DOS directory. If your 
  85. AUTOEXEC.BAT file includes the win or dosshell command, make 
  86. sure the KEYB command comes before the WIN or DOSSHELL command.

  88. Once you have loaded one of the Dvorak layouts, you can easily 
  89. switch between the Dvorak layout and the U.S. standard layout.

  91. * To switch back to the U.S. standard layout, press CTRL+ALT+F1.
  92.  
  93. * To switch to the Dvorak layout, press CTRL+ALT+F2.
  94.  
  95. * To disable the United States (U.S.) Dvorak keyboard layout 
  96.   for MS-DOS

  98. * To disable the United States (U.S.) Dvorak keyboard layout 
  99.   for MS-DOS, delete the line with the KEYB command from your
  100.   AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  102. LEARNING TO USE THE DVORAK KEYBOARD LAYOUTS

  104. The illustrations on the next page can help you learn a new 
  105. keyboard layout. You may want to take a class or purchase stickers 
  106. to put on your keys so you see the new layout as you type. For

  114. DVORAK KEYBOARD LAYOUTS FOR WINDOWS
  115. -----------------------------------
  116. Microsoft also provides Dvorak keyboard layouts for Microsoft 
  117. Windows, Microsoft Windows for Workgroups and Microsoft 
  118. Windows NT. Windows includes the Dvorak keyboard layout for 
  119. two-handed typists. The Dvorak layouts for single-handed typists 
  120. are available on the GA0650.ZIP file. If you have a modem, 
  121. you can download the GA0650.ZIP file from network services, 
  122. including the following:

  130. * Microsoft Download Service (MSDL), which you can reach in the
  131.   United States by calling (206) 936-6735 or in Canada by calling 
  132.   (416) 507-3022. Use a baud rate of 1200, 2400, or 9600, no parity bit, 
  133.   8 data bits, and 1 stop bit. The file containing the layouts on 
  134.   MSDL is named GA0650.EXE.

  143. NOTE: If you use MS-DOS-based applications with Windows, you must 
  144. install the Dvorak layouts for MS-DOS to get Dvorak support for 
  145. those applications.
